Southwest Florida Teen Challenge

Our team had the amazing opportunity to do Aveda Makeovers for women from the Southwest Florida Teen Challenge.  It was such a great experience and it was our pleasure to offer these women a new look.

A Whole Lotta Pink

October is always filled with events that raise awareness for Breast Cancer Research.  This year the Felix Andrew Aveda Creative Team helped raise donations by entering models into a hair show A Whole Lotta Pink.  The show had three categories: Avant Garde, Vintage Classic and Creative Color.

Before the event I was fortunate enough to participate in redCHOCOLATE, with David Adams, an artist who helped revolutionize the way we look at hair color.  The class inspired me to create a look for the hair show.

A Whole Lotta Pink was October 14th, during the last session of redCHOCOLATE.  The session focused on color workshop with two models.  Naturally, I utilized my time with the best in Aveda hair color education to brainstorm and create my look for the Creative Color category.

We lifted my model Ashley's hair and did a botanical therapy treatment for the first step.  I then color melded her hair from a deep violet to a soft pink with a Ombre effect.  My team mates Shayna and Alex helped with the styling and makeup finishing touches.




The final result was a Creative Color category winner.  Our team entered three other models for the other two categories, but the competition was fierce.  The event was a success; over $6000 was raised and donated to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.

Static Electricity?

Nobody likes static electricity, especially if its messing with your hair.

This is an issue one of my guests brought to my attention the other day.  Solution?  Air Control+Aveda Paddle Brush.  The lightweight hairspray helps keep the static under control.

Feathers-Flying Far, Far Away!

James Clark, a stylist and consultant, shared the following Blog titled, "Feathers-Flying Far, Far Away!"  

In the spring, summer, and early fall of 2011, the notorious feather was in full swing. You couldn't go anywhere without seeing at least someone with one in their hair. From girls in middle school to college, to women in their mid to late twenties, the feather was one of a kind. Infusing personality and flare within ones hair and style. Applying that extra touch of spice into the look. And last, but not least...being able to say, "Hey look, I have a feather too!" Mix all of that with the unfortunate, terrible fortune of women in their thirties and forties tossing a feather in as well, it comes to no greater triumph than to announce that the feather is, undeniably...DEAD!

The tipping point came when professional women were wanting feathers, attempting to join in on a fad that was for the youth. Of course, nothing is wrong with going out of the box, having fun with your look, etc...but when one adds a feather to their wavy, brassy, two-toned hair, lets just say it gets lost in the translation. 

I recently saw a deal at a salon being ran for a special on feather extensions and desperately wanted to call the owner to tell her that she missed the boat. I was also in line at the grocery store the other day and saw the woman in front of me, in her late thirties, have a feather in her dark, curly hair. First of all, you could barely see the feather. Second of all, it had no business being stuck in there. It's the same concept of a 55 year old man having a faux hawk. It just shouldn't happen.

So please, I beg you, with every ounce of my open minded heart, to grab your feathers, toss them in a scrap book, and save them to look at in a few years. You can marvel at how fun they were to wear in early/mid 2011, but please don't think about putting some in right now. You don't want to be my 56 year old friend Carl who just got a faux hawk or the woman who just got an extremely stacked bob, circa 2007....do ya? I didn't think so.
